Orchid Plant Care

In order to provide your plants with ideal orchid plant care that makes them flourish, you should devote some time to investigating the conditions in the regions where you specific species grow. Throughout the course of evolution, each orchid species has adapted to a very specific environment and your task is to mimic this type of environment in order to make your orchid thrive. Proper Cymbidium orchid care will for instance involve providing your orchid with two different types of fertilizer. From August to the end of January (if you live in the northern hemisphere) a low nitrogen fertilizer (6-25-25) you be administered, while a high nitrogen fertilizer (25-9-9) is recommended from February to the end of July.

To make the availability of nutrients more similar to the situation in the natural home of the Cymbidium orchid, it is best to use a weak fertilizer solution and apply many small servings instead of one big serving. The cymbidium orchid is very sensitive to soggy mediums, and the same is true for many other orchids as well. The Dendrobium orchids are for instance found growing on trees or rocks in the wild, and their roots can not handle a soggy medium. For supreme Dendrobium orchid care, use a well draining potting mix or mount your Dendrobium orchid on a piece of wood or rock and let it grow just like it would in the wild.
